Playing it Safe with Liposuction & Tucking the Tummy
Article excerpts featuring Dr. Beverly Friedlander from the April 2004 issue of New Jersey Monthly Magazine

Beverly Friedlander, M.D., F.A.C.S.

Playing it Safe with Liposuction:

Having liposuction now will have you ready to show off the results this summer. “There are areas of the body that are resistant to all of our best diet and exercise efforts,” says Beverly Friedlander M.D., a Short Hills board certified plastic surgeon. “When done in a hospital setting with an experienced board-certified plastic surgeon, liposuction is an extremely safe procedure,” she says. “Liposuction addresses our body image. We gain confidence in ourselves, knowing that we look good in our clothes.

Dr. Friedlander uses a tumescent technique of liposuction along with power-assisted instruments to remove extra fatty tissue. Multiple areas are often treated at once, for instance, the hips, thighs, and abdomen can be done together. Liposuction is also an excellent technique to remove fatty deposits in the chin, the male chest, the “love handles,” and the lower extremities. She performs the procedure only in hospitals and follows each patient closely afterwards.

Tucking the Tummy:

A child changes a woman’s life like nothing else. “The rapid growth of the abdominal area during pregnancy can stretch the skin, causing irreversible changes similar to those seen in patients who have lost a lot of weight,” says Beverly Friedlander, MD, FACS, a Short Hills board-certified plastic surgeon. “Nine months of expansion can stretch and separate the abdominal muscles in ways that exercise alone cannot repair. My typical tummy-tuck patient is usually fit because she is actively involved in an exercise program. Often she has a C-section scar which may create a deformity that exaggerates the lower abdominal area.

“My patients are very energetic, feel good about themselves and their lives, but hate the appearance of their tummies/ They know what they wish to change: stretch marks, localized fat, excess skin, and bulging tummies.” Some of them can benefit from liposuction. Others may also need a tummy-tuck. “We sometimes lift and enhance the breast at the same time,” Dr. Friedlander says.

“I perform the surgery at the Overlook Hospital in Summit and keep them overnight, which is sometimes a welcome respite. I’ll review the early physical limitations, including child care and work, and when they can return to sexual activity. My tummy-tuck patients wish that they had elected the surgery earlier in their lives.”
